Constraints on Fundamental Cosmological Parameters with Upcoming Epoch of Reionization Observations

چکیده
The first generation of epoch of reionization experiments have the potential to characterize the processes and history of reionization for redshifts 6 < z < 12 by observing the power spectrum of the redshifted 21 cm radiation. These power spectrum observations could also contribute to our knowledge of the underlying cosmology, particularly at redshifts before the effects of reionization strongly dominate the cosmic radio background. In this paper we explore the cosmological constraints of 21 cm power spectrum observations with the Mileura Widefield Array (MWA) and its potential successor, the MWA5000, assuming a flat ΛCDM cosmology and that reionization occurs below a redshift of z = 8. In addition to a standard set of cosmological parameters, we include two nuisance parameters related to the systematics and foregrounds faced by radio observations. While the MWA observations cannot constrain the underlying cosmology, MWA5000 could provide useful constraints, in particular on the slope of the inflationary power spectrum, ns, and the running of the spectral index, αs. Constraints on Fundamental Cosmological Parameters with Upcoming Redshifted 21 Cm Observations
Constraints on cosmological parameters from upcoming measurements with the Mileura Widefield Array—Low Frequency Demonstrator (MWA-LFD) of the redshifted 21 cm power spectrum are forecast assuming a flat ΛCDM cosmology and that the reionization of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium occurs below a redshift of z = 8. We find that observations with the MWA-LFD cannot constrain the underl...
متن کاملMutual Constraints Between Reionization Models and Parameter Extraction From Cosmic Microwave Background Data
Spectroscopic studies of high-redshift objects combined with increasingly precise data on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are beginning to place strong bounds on the epoch of hydrogen reionization. Parameter estimation from current CMB data continues, however, to be subject to several degeneracies. Here, we focus on those degeneracies in CMB parameter forecasts related to the optical dept...
متن کاملCosmic microwave background constraints on the epoch of reionization
We use a compilation of cosmic microwave anisotropy data to constrain the epoch of reionization in the Universe, as a function of cosmological parameters. We consider spatially-flat cosmologies, varying the matter density Ω0 (the flatness being restored by a cosmological constant), the Hubble parameter h and the spectral index n of the primordial power spectrum. Our results are quoted both in t...
متن کاملThe Sensitivity of First Generation Epoch of Reionization Observatories and Their Potential for Differentiating Theoretical Power Spectra
Statistical observations of the epoch of reionization (EOR) power spectrum provide a rich data set for understanding the transition from the cosmic “dark ages” to the ionized universe we see today. EOR observations have become an active area of experimental cosmology, and three first generation observatories—MWA, PAST, and LOFAR—are currently under development. In this paper we provide the firs...
متن کاملTrends in Large Scale Structure Observations and the Likelihood of Early Reionization
With the imminent promise of constraints on the epoch of reionization from observations of microwave background anisotropies, the question of whether or not the standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model permits early reionization has been subjected to detailed investigation by various authors, with the conclusion that reionization may occur at quite high redshift. However, it is widely accepted tha...
